Dr Adam Claasen is one of New Zealand’s leading military historians. His Massey University teaching and research focus on the New Zealand military experience, German history, the two world wars in Europe, and American Foreign Policy.
He is a University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship grantee, a Smithsonian Institution Fellowship recipient, a Massey University Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Sustained Excellence in Teaching awardee, a Fulbright Scholar, and a Massey University Research Medal (Team) winner. His doctoral thesis was published as Hitler’s Northern War; the Luftwaffe’s ill-fated Campaign, 1940-1945 (Kansas UP.2001).
More recently, Dr Claasen has written on the part played by New Zealand and Australian airmen in the Battle of Britain: Dogfight: The Battle of Britain (Exisle, 2011) and the experiences of New Zealand aircrew and ground crew in the First World War: Fearless: The extraordinary story of New Zealand’s Great War airmen (Massey University Press, 2017). He is about to complete a four-year biographical project on the life and times of one of New Zealand’s most important airmen of the twentieth century.
